Foursquare, Gowalla, myTown, Cause World, and Whrrl 3 where do I check – in?

There seems to be a lot of noise about all these location based  apps, and now even more that SXSW is coming up. I’m pretty sure there still are a lot of people out there confused about this new language of check-ins, winning badges, founders, buying, and collecting rent vocabulary.

Whenever I try to tell people I know about ‘Foursquare” for example, the first reaction I get is “So whats the point, why do I want everyone to know where I am at all times?”. I guess that part I can only let you find out for yourself….

But for some others like me, who love “playing the game”, but don’t really want to check -in in 5 different apps every time go out for a cup of coffee, the question is, “which of these 5 apps I should use?

Foursquare: Redesigned right prior SXSW,”this app helps you find new ways to explore your city. You earn points for checking in to multiple places and going to new places. You can see what your friends have been up to, leave tips and to-do items for other travelers, and tweet out your locations so that others know what’s going on.” The update also made checkins and shouts faster, plus an easy way to view your checkin history.

Gowalla: Another app that just released a new update for the Austin conference, Gowalla version 2.0 for the iPhone just hit the App Store.  ”It is very similar to Foursquare in terms of location-based social networking, you can see where your friends have been and also see who else is hanging out at your current check-in location”. Now you can also upload a photo after checking in, browse photos from friends, and see photos taken at a spot.

myTown: Is a GPS game about buying and owning your favorite local shops, restaurants, and hangouts on your iPhone. First, Check-in at real-world locations to unlock rewards. Then buy and own your favorite real-life places. Through out the day, you can collect rent. The more visitors that come to your stores, the more it raises your properties’ total value.

Cause World: is a mobile application that lets you help the world while you shop! By checking in, you earn karmas from sponsors and you can donate those karmas for specific actions to improve the world. Some of the many actions in the CauseMall include donating to classrooms in need, planting a tree, providing a meal for the hungry, or helping an injured animal.

Whrrl 3: New promising location based app created by Pelago. Check In, share experiences, invite friends, add photos and notes, and a lot more things to play with. Check in so you can find out interesting information about the place or the area, plus your or your friends’ relationship with the place. Users check in with the ability to share to Facebook and Twitter.
