Top 3 US Mobile Apps and the importance of Indie App Stores

GetJar, just released their latest download figures for the United States. GetJar is the world’s largest independent mobile app store, providing more than 20,000 unique mobile applications across all major handsets and platforms

Social communications and productivity applications continue to do best on the mobile.  With Facebook and Google taking the top 2 slots, Nimbuzz continues to hold the number 3 spot, a place it has conquered ever since GetJar started publishing these reports.

T-Mobile USA CTO,  Cole Brodman, mentioned at Mobilize that T-Mobile’s data traffic quadrupled due to social media app use, in the past quarter alone. Hardly suprising then that 5 out of the top 10 most downloaded apps on GetJar are social media communications related.

GetJar, in April, publicly announced that Nimbuzz has been downloaded over 10 million times, and recently measured over half a billion total app downloads from its platform.

GetJar is a force to be reckoned with. As an independent app store, it has the potential to become very relevant in what people will download, and where they look for quality.  After all, not everyone will continue “buying their car from the oil company”?

It could be the indie app stores such as GetJar, who just like specialized sneaker stores, will soon have the best applications recommended by friends and experts they trust.

For some reason I have that Mircosoft ring in my head about “Where do you want to go today?” from years ago. Must be because sooner or later I might ask myself that question to determine which app store(s) I will shop at today.

Think about it.
